“★★★1/2 – a deliberately paced film with enveloping moods that feel like symphony movements.” – Odie Henderson, RogerEbert.com
“Larsen never set out to deliver answers; just rich, searching stories rounded in real experience — precisely what Hall has translated to the big screen for her formidable first outing.” – Kate Erbland, IndieWire
Rebecca Hall wrote and directed this adaptation of Chicago born author Nella Larsen’s 1929 novel (although the film is set in New York City during the Harlem Renaissance) which is about two childhood friends who encounter one another again in adulthood.
Irene (Tessa Thompson), who goes by Reeny, lives with her doctor husband (André Holland) and children in a stately Harlem house. Claire (Ruth Negga) is married to a racist businessman (Alexander Skarsgård), who has no idea that his wife is not white.
By passing as white, Claire has enjoyed the benefits of wealth and privilege, but she is also lonely, estranged from her family, friends, and her community. This is why she becomes so attached to Irene, spending more time at her home, befriending her children, and charming her husband. However, Irene cannot help thinking about what would happen if Clare’s husband discovered the truth about his wife. As the film progresses, filmmaker Rebecca Hall creates an increasingly claustrophobic world both constructed and destabilized by racism, identity, and sexual frustration, leading to a shocking conclusion.
For the film, Passing, the Academy should have recognized Ruth Negga and Tessa Thompson for their excellent performances with a Best Supporting Actress nomination and Rebecca Hall should also have been nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. In addition, this film would also qualify for Best Costume Design, given its authentic attention to the era in which Passing is set, The Harlem Renaissance.
Programmed and written by FACETS Film Program Director, Charles Coleman.
