“Stewart is one of our most compelling young actresses, and her psychologically rich, precisely modulated performance in Personal Shopper contains both an unsettled curiosity and a twitchy intensity.” – Scott Macaulay, Filmmaker Magazine
Kristen Stewart gives one of her most nuanced and interior performances in Olivier Assayas’s beguiling 21st century ghost story, Personal Shopper.
Skillfully remixing genre elements, Personal Shopper follows the Paris-based stylist Maureen (Stewart) as she travels across Europe stocking the couture wardrobe of her socialite boss while simultaneously trying to contact her recently deceased brother through supernatural means. When she begins receiving text messages from an unknown number, Maureen’s desire to connect with Lewis leads her to believe he may be digitally contacting her from beyond the grave.
Assayas touches on essential points about the individual, the spiritual, and consumer capitalism in this enigmatic look at how technology might interact with the paranormal. Reunited with his modern muse and César-winning MVP of Clouds of Sils Maria, the film’s emotionally uncertain tone perfectly utilizes Stewart’s often misunderstood yet highly effective anxious acting style.
