Japanese cyberpunk was pushed to its breaking point with Shozin Fukui’s Pinocchio 964 (1991) – a feral, brain-melting plunge into the depths of identity collapse, body horror, and dystopian decay.
Screening in a brand-new 4K restoration scanned from the original 16mm negatives!
Following in the footsteps of Tetsuo: The Iron Man, Fukui’s debut feature throws viewers headfirst into the chaos of a futuristic hellscape, where a discarded sex slave android—model 964 Pinocchio—is dumped in the streets after malfunctioning. Broken, mute, and disoriented, he’s taken in by Himiko, a mysterious young woman with fractured memories of her own. As they navigate an alienating and decaying city, Pinocchio begins to awaken… and unravel.
Shot on grimy 16mm and driven by convulsive handheld camerawork, Pinocchio 964 is pure sensory overload. Dialog is sparse, but screams are plentiful. Bodies melt, vomit flies, and reality fractures in a relentless barrage of industrial noise and psychosexual horror. At once grotesque and strangely poetic, the film confronts themes of dehumanization, technological decay, and repressed trauma with a raw, convulsive intensity.
Fukui’s vision is not for the faint of heart—but for those willing to be submerged in its nightmare logic, Pinocchio 964 stands as one of the most uncompromising, offbeat gems of Japanese experimental horror.

JULY 18 DOUBLE FEATURE
We’ve paired up with our 4th annual Anime Club Presents series for a double dose of experimental Japanese cyberpunk, pairing two live-action cult films that echo the dystopian intensity and transhuman themes of classic anime. Sogo Ishii’s Burst City (1982) explodes with punk-fueled rebellion and industrial collapse, while Shozin Fukui’s Pinocchio 964 (1991) drags viewers into a grotesque spiral of identity and decay. Both films push genre and sanity to the brink—a sensory overload of noise, chaos, and cyberpunk anarchy.
