FACETS Film Trivia is back at 7pm on Thursday, June 27th with our classic brand of infotainment quiz show fun, followed up by an after-trivia screening of Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 heist film, Point Break.
An FBI agent goes undercover to infiltrate a gang of bank robbing surfers in LA.
Made during the height of the big budget Hollywood summer blockbuster action film boom, director Kathryn Bigelow managed to create a near perfect genre film while also completely subverting it. Taking from her academic background in cultural theory and semiotics, Bigelow masterfully takes a high octane, macho, big explosion cops-vs-robbers heist story and subtextually subverts it by also making it a queer love story where the male gaze is turned back on men themselves.
Simultaneously a high water mark as an action blockbuster, popcorn muncher dad-flick and a piece of high concept feminist film commentary, Point Break serves whatever level of intellectual enjoyment (or lack thereof!) you want in film at any given moment.
