“Handsomely produced …with sincere performances, lush cinematography and a classical score…never fails to follow through on its scandalous promise.” – Teo Bugbee, The New York Times
“Director-writer Bruce LaBruce has long been famous as the master of Canadian “queercore” cinema, and he has achieved in Saint-Narcisse his magnum opus.” – Bradley Gibson, Film Threat
FACETS Film Ed Dept Trivia is back with our classic brand of infotainment quiz show fun, followed up by an after-trivia screening of Bruce LaBruce’s modern love letter to the psychosexual thrillers of the 1970’s, Saint-Narcisse (2020), preceded by the premiere of trivia co-host Raphael Jose Martinez’s new short film The Fleshmongers (2023).
The latest from Canada’s reigning “King of Kink,” follows Dominic, a young man with a fetish… for himself. Nothing turns him on more than his reflection, with much of his time spent taking Polaroid selfies. When his loving grandmother dies, he discovers a deep family secret: his lesbian mother didn’t die in childbirth and he has a twin brother, Daniel, raised in a remote monastery by a depraved priest, held captive against his will! The power of destiny brings together the two beautiful, identical brothers, who, after being reunited with their mother Beatrice, are soon embroiled in a blasphemous web of sex, revenge and redemption.
In Saint-Narcisse, Elegant visuals are combined with LaBruce’s notorious punk provocations in “a wild ride that’s enjoyable in all its B-movie glory while also titillating the intellect” (The Hollywood Reporter).
Bruce LaBruce, Canada, 2020, DCP, 101 mins. In English and French with English subtitles.
THE FLESHMONGERS is the newest film by Chicago filmmaker Raphael Jose Martinez. It’s made completely of vintage 8mm pornographic films found in the back rooms and basements of junk stores across Chicago. From gay 50s beefcake/physique modeling, to amateur private sapphic romps, to the golden age of 70s celluloid porn, the history of celluloid American sex film is represented here. Every piece of film was digitally scanned by hand, allowing for the physical manipulation of not only the film’s movement, but the images and colors themselves. With the addition of its breathy voice over narrative, co-written by actress Leah Rose, THE FLESHMONGERS gives a cheeky take on the politics and material reality of physical labor. The result is horny, hypnotic, campy, experimental agitprop smut about the economic labor of bodies. Very NSFW… because the fun stuff usually is.
Raphael Jose Martinez, USA, 2023, 8 mins.
This screening was programmed by FACETS Film Trivia hosts Raphael Jose Martinez and Mike Vanderblit. Learn more about the monthly event here.
