Kevin Phillips’ Super Dark Times (2017) is a stark portrait of adolescence at its most fragile—where friendship, secrecy, and fear become forces too heavy for teenagers to bear.
Set in upstate New York during the mid-1990s, the film lingers in the textures of its era: corded phones, bike rides through leafless neighborhoods, VHS tapes, and a pre-Columbine atmosphere where violence felt unthinkable—until it wasn’t. When a violent accident shatters the world of best friends Zach and Josh, the familiar landscapes of cul-de-sacs and basements turn haunted, as paranoia and guilt warp their bond into something terrifying.
Shot with icy precision and an acute sense of place, Super Dark Times captures the disquiet of small-town America at the edge of the Rust Belt, where the silence between people can feel as ominous as the shadows gathering around them.
Though largely overlooked on release, FACETS was one of the few theaters to give the film a proper theatrical run. Since then, it has quietly built a cult following among younger audiences through streaming. This rare return to the big screen offers a chance to rediscover one of the most unsettling and empathetic coming-of-age films of the 2010s—an unflinching study of innocence fractured, in a world no longer safe, no longer whole.
