“A hallucinatory, erotic, still terrifying Italian horror masterpiece, equal parts Snow White and opium dream.” – Adam Nayman, The Ringer

“I continue to come away from it stunned by its combination of visceral horror and visual beauty.” – Peter Sobczynski, RogerEbert.com

A rapid assault on the senses paired with a whirling rejection of sanity, Dario Argento’s Suspiria (1977) is a masterclass in the colors of murder, the sounds of terror, and the feelings of fear – the perfect film to celebrate Halfway to Halloween!

Bolstered by Goblin’s pulsating score, and regularly cited as one of the greatest horror films of all time, Suspiria‘s genius timelessly transcends genres and generations. Minimally plotted for maximum impact, Suspiria‘s lack of character development or even narrative cohesion is secondary to its vibrant aesthetics of feminine violence. A young and beautiful American ballerina heads to Germany for training at a prestigious dance academy which happens to be run by a secret coven of European sorceresses. Wild and witchy adventures among the women soon ensue.

Co-written by Argento’s longtime muse Daria Nicolodi (Deep Red) and featuring an international ensemble cast of leading ladies Jessica Harper (The Phantom of the Paradise), Joan Bennett (House of Dark Shadows), Alida Valli (Eyes Without a Face) and Barbara Magnolfi (The Suspicious Death of a Minor), Suspiria’s hypnagogic savagery swirls around the screen like a deathly dancer’s pirouette, inevitably landing in the darkest crucible of bloodletting abandon.

This screening & special event was programmed by Stephanie Sack and FACETS’ Community Engagement Manager, John McDevitt.

BARBARA MAGNOLFI LIVE Q&A

If you’ve ever wondered about the who, when, where, and why about Dario Argento’s 1977 ballet school freakout Suspiria, you won’t want to miss pre- and post-screening Q&As with the film’s leading lady, Barbara Magnolfi.

Stephanie Sack, Chicago’s very own “La Gialloholique”, sits down with Barbara for two intimate chats about everything Suspiria. Expect to hear all about about Barbara’s audition for Argento, her character’s development on set, and the film’s epic legacy as one of the “greatest of all time.”
