Holiday Detour Series

Celebrate differently this year with films that stray from the traditional holiday fare but use their seasonal settings as a backdrop for compelling character studies.

"As the title suggests, it’s all pith, zest and juice – and a delicious, delirious seasonal treat."

- Telegraph

"...never settles for obvious polarities or entrenches its characters in two-dimensional assumptions about their moral or strategic priorities."

- Sight & Sound

"Rarely since Michael Mann directed “Collateral” has a filmmaker mapped Los Angeles as lovingly and, with such open eyes"

- New York Times

This award-winning 2015 drama-comedy follows best friends Sin-Dee and Alexandra in Los Angeles on Christmas Eve.

After getting released from a nearly month-long prison sentence, trans sex worker Sin-Dee Rella is received with a warning from her friend on Christmas Eve: her boyfriend has been cheating on her. What follows is a mad trek across most of Los Angeles to hunt down her boyfriend and give him a piece of her mind.

Giving new meaning to “life imitates art” Tangerine was well praised for its casting of sex workers turned actors who had a major input on the story development. Director Sean Baker met the two leads at a Los Angeles LBGT Center. The praise the film received for its portrayal of sex work and individual trans experiences is not only warranted but well-deserved.
