Billy Wilder has furnished The Apartment with a one-hook plot that comes out high in comedy, wide in warmth and long in running time. – Variety
Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine star in Billy Wilder’s all-time classic comedy of corporate and sexual manners, The Apartment.
C.C. Baxter (Lemmon) is an office clerk who courts favor with the executives in his office by giving them the key to his small apartment for their extramarital flings. Among them is his callous boss, J.D. Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray). At the company Christmas party, Baxter learns that Sheldrake is using his place to sleep with Miss Kubelik (MacLaine), the sweet elevator operator that the clerk has loved from afar. When Sheldrake coldly dumps the vulnerable young woman, Baxter sees the opportunity to save the woman of his dreams, but it might lose him his job.
By turns heartwarming and heartbreaking, The Apartment won five Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay. Restored by Park Circus in collaboration with Metro Goldwyn Mayer.
This screening will be preceded by an introduction from the co-managing editor of Cine-File, Ben Sachs.
