“Lowery’s unforgettable adaptation refuses to do the math for us, but it’s all the more thrilling for how it insists that the only true value of a thing in this world is that which we find in it for ourselves.” – David Ehrlich, IndieWire
An epic fantasy adventure based on the 14th-century epic poem in Arthurian legend, The Green Knight tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), the reckless and headstrong nephew of King Arthur (Sean Harris) and son of Morgan le Fay (Sarita Choudhury).
After the eponymous Green Knight (Ralph Ineson), a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men, comes to Camelot offering a challenge, the young knight embarks on a daring quest to confront him. Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeply introspective journey to define his character and prove his worth — to both his family and his kingdom — by facing his fate.
Also starring Alicia Vikander and Joel Edgerton, the latest work from director David Lowery (A Ghost Story) is a fresh and bold spin on a classic tale from the Knights of the Round Table. Lowery presents a series of contradictions and conflicts between duty, heroism, honor, fear, and temptation. He offers viewers a medieval world in which contemporary anxieties about nationality, national identity and personal politics can be explored.
The Green Knight should have been nominated for Best Cinematography, as it did receive an award from The National Society of Film Critics for Best Cinematography. Also, as part of his research, cinematographer Andrew Droz Palermo watched every King Arthur movie he could find, so that he could achieve the right look for this medieval fable film.
