A film unlike anything else you’ll ever see on a screen, The Holy Mountain (1973) is less a narrative than a full-body initiation.

Directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky at the height of his unrestrained creative powers, this hallucinatory epic blends mysticism, satire, religion, and pure spectacle into a singular cinematic experience that has to be felt to be understood.

Following a Christ-like figure through a series of increasingly elaborate and symbolic encounters, the film assembles a cast of spiritual seekers, each representing a different planet in the solar system, on a quest for immortality under the guidance of a mysterious alchemist. What unfolds is a barrage of unforgettable imagery: ritualistic transformations, alchemical experiments, and biting critiques of power, wealth, and colonialism, all rendered with jaw-dropping practical effects and an anything-goes philosophy.

Long revered as a cornerstone of midnight cinema, The Holy Mountain remains as provocative and disorienting as ever. Equal parts sacred text and prank, enlightenment and illusion.

But the journey doesn’t end there… Stay after the screening for a very special, secret bonus feature at 9:15pm – an unofficial, underground echo of Jodorowsky’s vision, reimagined through the chaotic lens of a beloved internet collective. If you know, you know.

Programmer Matt Silcock: “Every few years I check in with The Holy Mountain and I’m still surprised every time with how visionary, audacious, and just plain bonkers it is. A vicious and ultimately very meaningful critique on how materialism and spirituality should not and must not coexist. Time to share it on the big screen, not only with all the maniacs who come to Optical Noise and Cold Sweat, but with adventurous cinephiles everywhere.”
