“a meditation on innocence, violence, family dynamics, sexual exploitation, and feminine nature.” – Angela Lovell, Criterion Collection
Plunge into a swirling vortex of horror, comedy, romance, and musical in this glitzy and gory retelling of “The Little Mermaid” that bites deep into your heart in the fabulous decade of the 1980s.
When young mermaids Golden and Silver come ashore, they capture the attention of a drunken rock band on the beach. In no time, they form a sequins-and-fishscales act at a high-end strip club to instant acclaim. As the mermaids get a taste for life in the human world, Golden gets bored, but Silver becomes attached. They argue in ethereal whale songs only they can hear. Golden gets an offer from another assimilated sea creature to sing in his metal band. Silver falls in love with a bandmate, but, if he marries someone else instead, she’ll turn into sea foam, lost forever.
The sisters behind the film’s music are Barbara and Zuzanna Wroński of Polish pop rock band Ballady i Romanse (Ballads and Romances), who appear near the end of The Lure as an in-story live band.
Screening in Polish with English subtitles.
