What if chasing the secrets of a classic novel led you to the brink of madness?
The famous stage actor Rafael Álvarez, ‘El Brujo’, goes mad trying to stage Don Quixote of La Mancha, just as Alonso Quijano went mad reading chivalry romances. His obsession is to prove the Arab origins of the novel, as Cervantes himself claims in chapter IX of the book, attributing its authorship to a certain Cide Hamete Benengeli, an Arab historian. Chumilla-Carbajosa, a filmmaker and a personal friend of the actor, travels in search of answers while ‘El Brujo’ rehearses his show with the intention of revealing to the world his surprising discoveries about the myth of Don Quixote and an alleged secret society called Los Caballeros de la Palabra (The Knights of the Word).
Juan Manuel Chumilla-Carbajosa, Spain, 2022, 73 minutes, in Spanish with English subtitles.
