Director Sally Potter’s obsession with Argentinian tango led her to make this luscious and elegant 1997 film, shot by acclaimed cinematographer Robby Müller.
Potter plays herself in what feels like part autobiography, part invented fiction as her discovery of the sexy, South American partner dance becomes a fascination, both with the dance and with her teacher -master dancer Pablo Veron (also playing himself). Their evolving relationship, both as dancers and lovers, plays out almost like a dream, jumping between Paris, London and Buenos Aires. Unable to focus on a new film project, she trades the eager-to-act Pablo a part in the movie for dance lessons. Potter (who helped compose some of the original music and sings the closing song) explores the creative process and the emotional intimacy that dance triggers across many beautiful and striking tango sequences with the remarkable Veron in a joyful and often rapturous piece of work.
