“★★★★ – Trier’s stirringly sophisticated masterpiece, unrolls in piecemeal manner, but once fully extended is a tapestry of unfeigned experiences sowed with the thread of truth, in all its painful ambivalence.” – Carlos Aguilar, RogerEbert.com
“Making a film about a generational mood is a nigh-impossible challenge, but Trier achieves it by never losing focus of the singular character he’s created.” – David Sims, The Atlantic
Director Joachim Trier (Thelma, Oslo, August 31st) returns with another modern twist on a classically constructed character portrait of contemporary life in Oslo.
Julie is turning thirty and her life is an existential mess. Several of her talents have gone to waste and her older boyfriend, Aksel – a successful graphic novelist – is pushing for them to settle down. One night, she gatecrashes a party and meets the young and charming Eivind. Before long, she has broken up with Aksel and thrown herself into yet another new relationship, hoping for a new perspective on her life, but she will soon come to realize that some life choices are already behind her.
Chronicling four years in the life of Julie, The Worst Person in the World examines one woman’s quest for love and meaning in the modern world. Fluidly told in twelve chapters, the film features a breakout performance by Cannes Best Actress winner Renate Reinsve as she explores new professional avenues and embarks on relationships with two very different men in her search for happiness and identity.
The Worst Person in the World has received Oscar nominations for Best International Feature Film and Best Original Screenplay.
