“The small-budget indie is a complex portrait of the ways that trauma and addiction haunt an alcoholic mother, and her family, in the South.” -Beandra July, The New York Times

To Leslie is a sad, sweet country song of a movie, with a steel-guitar twang of love and loss.” – Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

Leslie (Andrea Riseborough in an Academy Award nominated role) is a West Texas single mother struggling to provide for her 14 year old son when she wins the lottery.

If the idea that money and success only amplify who you already are, then the reckless and addictive protagonist who wins a $190,000 in the film To Leslie is destined to hit rock bottom rather quickly. Based on a true story, this drama stars Andrea Riseborough (Black Mirror) as the eponymous heroine, spends this monetary bounty only six years later. A raging alcoholic, she is estranged from her family, has wound up homeless, and after getting bounced from the run-down motel she was staying in, is trying to desperately reconcile with her now 20-year-old son, James. She is living hard and fast, running from the world of heartbreak she left behind, finding herself unwelcome and unwanted by those she wronged. Sweeney (Marc Maron), a lonely motel clerk,  takes a chance on her when no one else will and with his support, Leslie comes face to face with the consequences of her actions, a life of regret, and a second chance to make a good life for herself and her son.

Riseborough’s stark and raw performance as someone who cannot get out of her own way has been nominated for an Academy Award, which has received considerable controversy due to an unconventional campaign. Nevertheless, Andrea Riseborough delivers a tour-de-force performance that led to a (well-deserved) Oscar Nomination which shocked the Hollywood establishment. To Leslie also has key roles from a number of other notable cast members, who provide solid performances, including Allison Janney (MomBad Education) and Stephen Root (BarryNews Radio) as biker couple Nancy and Dutch. In a world of working class bikers, construction workers and cowboys deep in the heart of the Lone Star State, Riseborough’s reckless barfly has burned so many personal bridges and made her a hometown laughingstock, she finds herself trying to set things, despite putting on an air of false bravado and indifference. The remarkable filmmaking debut of director Michael Morris makes it clear that the only person who can save Leslie is herself.
