Optical Noise presents two experimental films of dark, sapphic eroticism by Maria Beatty.

Venezuelan filmmaker Maria Beatty has been making films and videos that border between fetish content and arthouse experimentation since 1989. Clearly influenced by German Expressionism, film noir, gothic subculture, and classic surrealism, these films take forbidden, personal desire (Beatty appears herself in The Black Glove), and elevates  and As the old joke states, the difference between pornography and erotica is lighting, and the high contrast of Beatty’s black and white filmmaking make it clear that she very much values the full aesthetic immersion of the erotic over the base prurience of the pornographic.

LADIES OF THE NIGHT: LES VAMPYRES (1998)

Night is falling. A frightened Schoolgirl makes her way along the deserted cobbled street, glancing fearfully around her. She is being pursued, but by whom–or what? Swept away, she awakens in an eerie, candlelit mansion. Her captors, the mysterious Ladies of the Night. Ageless and deadly, they examine their newest plaything. Teasing, tormenting, seducing, they toy with their young victim. As her alarm subsides, she submits to their dark, haunting beauty more and more eagerly… Led to the underground Torture Chamber, flogged, paddled, and caned, she is driven to the brink of absolute surrender… With the approach of dawn, her torture intensifies, and the Vampires at last taste her Virgin blood.

THE BLACK GLOVE (1996)

The brooding aura of total sexual abandon is present in every gesture, every slap & caress in this theatre of passion. The flame of the candle that illuminates and torments, reveals the wondrous form of the willing submissive, whose haunting wide eyes and full moist parted lips recall the classic silent screen goddesses Pola Negri, Louise Brooks … but they never dared reveal themselves so totally, so openly to the camera’s eager and demanding gaze.
