In-Person Screening

Under the Skin

Screening October 16, 2022

The movie’s eerie, climactic image challenges our conventional notions of human identity and leaves us reflecting on the possibility that every being in the universe is an alien in disguise.” – The New York Times

From director Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast, Birth) comes a work of existential science fiction that journeys to the heart of what it means to be human, extraterrestrial, or something in between.

A gorgeous woman of unknown origin (Scarlett Johansson) cruises the streets of Scotland in search of isolated or forsaken men, luring a succession of lost souls into an otherworldly lair. They are seduced, stripped of their humanity, and never heard from again. Based on the novel by Michel Faber, Under the Skin examines human experience from the perspective of an unforgettable heroine, and in order to maximize the realism of the story, Glazer had Johansson interact with non-actors, whose unscripted performances were captured using hidden cameras. This nameless alien creature is an extraterrestrial femme fatale, who gradually acclimates to her borrowed skin, until she is abducted into humanity with devastating results, in this surrealist body horror story.

Directed by Jonathan Glazer, United Kingdom/Switzerland, 2013, DCP, 108 mins.
