“The ironic tone is so precisely maintained here that the game becomes the film’s main pleasure, especially when it’s as well performed as it is here.” – Derek Elley, Variety
Love shifts perspective between illusion and reality when a wealthy man begins an awkward courtship of a young woman met through a mutual friend, and she has to decide on whether or not to surrender her virginity.
In his third film, prolific auteur, South Korean director Hong Sang-soo showcases his remarkable trademark style of looking at the interplay between the sexes, not to mention the tricks and traps of storytelling. An early masterpiece, Virgin Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors as well as his multi-award winning The Day a Pig Fell Into the Well and its follow-up The Power of Kangwon Province, have established Hong San-Soo as the reigning Korean poet laureate of mating rituals in contemporary relationships, and his quest to unveil the truth and confusion behind love and desire. Despite its provocative title this film, (named after a Marcel Duchamp work), Virgin Stripped Bare by her Bachelors is a mature, and a clever humorous study of romance.
