The evening begins in a near-future Tokyo haunted by military anxiety, political instability, and the uneasy illusion of peacetime. What starts as a procedural involving a police unit and advanced machinery slowly unfolds into a chilling meditation on war, state power, and national memory—widely regarded as one of Oshii’s defining achievements.

The second feature drifts into stranger territory: a quiet, melancholic sci-fi mystery centered on memory, time, and a girl who may not fully belong to reality. Experimental and deeply atmospheric, it offers an early glimpse of the philosophical and emotional concerns that would come to define Oshii’s later work.
