The directorial debut feature from Yoshiaki Kawajiri is a sleek and stylish dark fantasy neo-noir featuring a saturated color palette, a hypnagogic city pop soundtrack, and unforgettable animation sequences. 

In the near future, the human world exists parallel to a world of demons and dark magic. The two have long abided by an uneasy peace treaty, but its time is almost up, and a new one must be negotiated. Now, two agents–a top human agent and a beautiful assassin from the other world–must protect the only man who can seal the treaty from dark world renegades or die trying! 

Based on the first novel in a series by Hideyuki Kikuchi and known for its transgressive body-horror visuals (the most famous being a predatory spider woman who attacks her lover), Wicked City might seem like a particularly difficult anime to adapt into live action. However, just five years after the film’s release, it received a 1992 Hong Kong adaptation that received a similar cult status in the U.S. and Europe and still plays festivals and midnight screenings to this day.
