“Def by Temptation is vital and funny, but is also reflective in ways not typical of genre fare.”- Kevin Thomas, LA Times
At odds with his religious faith and other desires, a young minister-in-training becomes the target of an evil succubus that preys in New York City.
Arguably the introduction of hip hop in horror cinema, Def By Temptation tells an age-old story of the battle between spiritual faith and mortal desires. Divinity student and minister-in-training Joel is compelled to the city where his cousin, stylish aspiring actor K introduces him to ‘90s New York: rap music, bachelor-pad apartment, bar-hopping – and sex. Soon, Joel finds himself the target of a demon, disguised as a seductive temptress.
Troma’s president Lloyd Kaufman declared this film the best of the famous horror studio’s canon. The film features a standout, villainous performance from Cynthia Bond, the charismatic Kadeem Harrison from A Different World fame, an early cameo from Samuel L. Jackson, and the debut of lead, writer, and director James Bond III. The artful cinematography is done by none other than Ernest Dickerson, who began his career collaborating with Spike Lee and grew to become a director himself, authoring works like Juice (1992), Demon Knight (1995), and Bones (2001).
