LA CHIMERA – May 30 & June 1-2

Alice Rohrwacher (The WondersHappy as Lazzaro), one of the most important contemporary independent filmmakers, conjures a magical, hilarious, romantic adventure set in a rural Italy eternally caught between the ancient and the modern.

Josh O’Connor (ChallengersThe Crown) stars as Arthur, a ne’er-do well disheveled English archaeologist, who has just completed his prison sentence and longs for his late lover, Beniamina. He teams up with a wayward crew of “tombaroli,” or tomb raiders, who contribute to a thriving market in stolen Etruscan goods. They regard Arthur as a mystic for his ability to use a forked tree branch to locate treasures, and as Arthur immerses himself in the tombaroli, he has yet to overcome his grief, and he wonders if he might be reunited with Beniamina beyond the mortal world. The prospects of hitting the proverbial jackpot and making the big sale to an infamous trafficker named Spartaco (Alba Rohrwacher) are on the horizon. When the company unearths a fifth-century relic of invaluable worth, the dark side of plundering the past comes into focus, and the question of who it belongs to — everyone or no one? — is raised.

Alice Rohrwacher has conjured a marvelous and entertaining film that is also an adventurous journey that intertwines the destinies of several characters in this period romantic drama.

CIVIL WAR – June 22-23 & 27

From director Alex Garland (Annihilation, Ex Machina) comes a terrifyingly resonant dystopian thriller about a near-future America embroiled in a second bloody Civil War.

Nick Offerman’s “three-term” president and the troops loyal to him are under attack from the Western Forces, a coalition of militias from California and Texas. The ensuing war has left America strewn with burnt-out cars, smoldering buildings, and homeless refugees. As the US government engages in armed conflict with seceding factions—the Florida Alliance and the militias of California and Texas—a group of journalists attempt to travel to the Capitol before rebel armies complete their siege and kill the President before he can be interviewed. These journalists are as follows: veteran war photographer Lee (Kirsten Dunst), Reuters correspondent Joel (Wagner Moura), fledgling photographer Jessie (Cailee Spaeny), and elderly reporter Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson) and what they find on their journey is a once-unified country ravaged by war crimes and scorched by violent insurgent coalitions, in a polarized world where someone’s worldview is reinforced by their own partisan media.

Civil War is a disturbing film that will be a provocative experience that offers an exhilarating, disturbingly plausible vision of a house divided.
