The short films in this collection focus on immigrant and first generation youth who’s life journeys encourage students to express empathy and understanding, and recognize just and human solutions that go beyond borders.

For Ages 11-14 | 60 minutes | Presented in English and original languages with subtitles.

Themes: Understanding differences, inclusion, immigration/immigration process, hopes and dreams, identity, first generation experiences.

Content Warning: Separation/loss, physical and/or emotional conflict.

Short Films

Kotoba (Kaede Miyamura, Australia, 2022, 11 mins): Surrounded by gibberish in a foreign schoolyard, Hina, a new immigrant, attempts to make friends. She consults with Holly, a self-righteous sheep who helps her make a connection.

An Arab Family (Ramiel Petros, USA, 2023, 11 mins): An Arab American boy is awoken to his family’s otherness when he is alerted to his father’s thick accent. Once it has been heard, he cannot be unheard.

Baradar (Beppe Tufarulo, Italy, 2019, 15 mins): Two refugee brothers sustain each other, until they are forced to separate.

Ahmad’s Hair (Susan Koenen, Netherlands, 2017, 23 mins): Ahmad, a Syrian refugee in The Netherlands, decides to donate his hair to give back to the community which has helped him.
