Angélica is an intimate drama whose main themes are family, discrimination, migration and love.

After a long absence from Puerto Rico, Angelica returns home when her father, Wilfredo, suffers a stroke. This unexpected return and her father’s illness force Angelica to re-evaluate her relationship with her mother and family members who is unacceptable because of her skin color. She must face her insecurities and discovers that she has conflicts about her identity.

 

Angelica knows that she needs to resolve her problems with her family, before choosing an adventurous path to rediscover herself as an independent woman. Angélica is an intimate drama whose main themes are family, discrimination, migration and love. It is a family conflict that revolves around the struggle between mother and daughter which is told in a straightforward manner.

 

The relationships among Angelica’s family are troubled by racism, a theme that is very contemporary and sadly remains pertinent today. At the same time, it depicts migration and cultural realities while telling a universal story of rejection and self-acceptance. This psychological drama exposes the implications of these themes upon the family and individual, reflecting how the oppressive violence that racism engenders, and how it not only affects family relations but also the individual as well.
