“Banno’s lone Godzilla film becomes increasingly strange with every passing minute, and no frame is wasted when communicating the atrocities brought on by humans’ disregard for nature.” – Bloody Disgusting

A shocking kaiju experience filled with psychedelia and sludge-soaked gore!

In 1970, Yashimitsu Banno was assigned by Godzilla creator Tomoyuka Tanaka to write and direct the 11th entry in Toho’s Godzilla series. Banno based his film on observations of detergent foam-covered waters of local beaches and myriad chronic respiratory and neurologic diseases induced by Japan’s unregulated postwar industrial boom. What resulted is an experimental film unlike any other in the Godzilla canon, employing animation, surrealism, split screen, and montage to fabricate a most unsettling spectacle. In doing so, Banno creates a Godzilla film that is closer in its overarching concern for humanity’s survival to Ishiro Honda’s original Godzilla (1954) than any other film in the franchise.

Yoshimitsu Banno, Japan, 1971, 85 minutes, DCP
